WikiLeak weaks Government

WikiLeaks Makes Government Weaks

The CIA has launched a taskforce to assess the impact of 250,000 leaked US diplomatic cables. Its name? WikiLeaks Task Force, or WTF for short.

The group will be charged with scouring the released documents to survey damage caused by the disclosures. One of the most embarrassing revelations was that the US state department had drawn up a list of information it would like on key UN figures – it later emerged the CIA had asked for the information.
"Officially, the panel is called the WikiLeaks Task Force. But at CIA headquarters, it's mainly known by its all-too-apt acronym: WTF," the Washington Post reported.

WTF is more commonly associated with the Facebook and Twitter profiles of teenagers than secret agency committees. Given that its expanded version is usually an expression of extreme disbelief, perhaps the term is apt for the CIA's investigation.
Earlier this month the Guardian revealed that the CIA was responsible for drafting the data "wishlist" that the US state department wanted on UN secretary general, Ban Ki-moon, and other senior members of the organisation.

The Washington Post said the panel was being led by the CIA's counter-intelligence centre, although it has drawn in two dozen members from departments across the agency.

Although the CIA has featured in some WikiLeaks disclosures, relatively little of its own information has entered the ether, the paper reported. A recently retired former high-ranking CIA official told the Post this was because the agency "has not capitulated to this business of making everything available to outsiders".
"They don't even make everything available to insiders. And by and large the system has worked."
While most of the agency's correspondence is understood to be classified at the same "secret" level as the leaked cables that ended up online, it is understood the CIA uses different systems to those of other government agencies.

Security concerns 'derail' 3G

Security concerns 'derail' 3G

NEW DELHI: The government will prevent telcos from offering non-voice 3G mobile services in seven days, unless they demonstrate that these facilities can be tapped live, a senior department of telecom (DoT) official said.

The 3G data services that could be impacted include high-speed internet, download of music and video clips, chat and internet telephony calls. So far, state-run telcos BSNL and MTNL and private players such as Reliance Communications (RCOM) and Tata Teleservices have launched 3G -- high-end data services on mobiles -- while Bharti Airtel was slated to begin offering them by the year-end.

DoT last week halted video-calling services citing security concerns at the home ministry's behest, as these can be traced only a few minutes after they have ended. While intelligence agencies complain that such calls cannot be monitored live, executives with telcos say there is no technology available globally for real-time tapping of video calls.

During a meeting on Monday among representatives of telcos, the home ministry and security agencies, the Intelligence Bureau had sought a temporary ban on all 3G data services, a DoT official present said.

First-mover advantage lost
But, operators have been given up to seven days to demonstrate that data services can be tapped in real time, failing which the services will be disallowed. IB officials too have said they will discuss internally some of the proposals suggested by telcos during Monday's meeting, and come back within the next couple of days, this official added.

Any temporary ban on 3G services will dent the firstmover advantage enjoyed by RCOM, Tata Teleservices, and the state-run companies. It might also force Bharti Airtel, Vodafone, Idea Cellular, and Aircel to delay their launch plans.

"If we need to go through an equipment retesting drill, services will be delayed for at least six to eight weeks," said an official at a telecom company, who did not wish to be named.

Private operators and state run companies together paid Rs 67,000 crore to the government for 3G airwaves after an auction held in May. In addition, companies have spent several hundreds of crores on infrastructure to deploy these services.

Companies bid aggressively for 3G airwaves as they want to target high-end customers who would be willing to pay premium rates for value added services. But if the government follows the ban on video calls and data services, the difference between 3G existing mobile services would virtually disappear.

Last week, the industry lobby representing CDMA and dual-technology operators such as RCOM and Tata Teleservices wrote to the telecom minister seeking that the ban on video calls be revoked. The industry body said interception of video calls was only possible when the call ended, and that it would take six to nine months for the live tapping system to be implemented. The industry body, AUSPI, also met telecom minister Kapil Sibal in this regard.

Ducati joins hands with Videocon for its first ever pan-India bike rally

Eight Ducati Monster 796 motorcycles will be touring across the country promoting the Italian bike-maker as well as Videocon's latest Ducati branded V6200 smart phone

Indian consumer appliance giant, Videocon has partnered with Italian superbike-maker for India’s first ever Ducati motorcycle rally that will see eight riders astride Ducati Monster 796 motorcycles covering eight cities including Mumbai, Pune, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Chennai, Bangalore, Delhi and Chandigarh. Termed as ‘Mo-biking’, an amalgamation of a smart mobile phone and stylish motorcycles, the Mo-Biking road trip will help create awareness for Ducati as well as Videocon’ foray into the mobile phone market and its brand new offering, the V6200 Videocon Ducati Brand licensed smart phone. The trip has been divided into two teams that will traverse across eight cities and help promote the two big brands.

This is the first time that an Indian brand has launched a licensed mobile phone from an International motorcycle maker. Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Saurabh Dhoot (Director, Videocon Group) said: “We are proud to introduce a new trend with the first ever Ducati brand licensed sports phone in India. “Mo-Biking” is not just the theme of our association but is an experience in which we want all adventure enthusiasts to participate”.

Nissan Unveils New Global Sedan

At the 8th China International Automobile Exhibition, Nissan Motor Co. Ltd has taken the wraps off their all new Global Sedan which is also destined for India.

To be built on Nissan’s 'V' platform, the new sedan is set to go on sale in India by the second half of 2011. As of now, Nissan hasn't given the car a name for the Indian market, however in China the car will be badged as the 'Sunny' a popular Nissan entry level sedan name that has a strong brand association with the company. Incidentally the global sedan will be sold in across 170 countries.

The Indian version of the global sedan will be manufactured at Nissan's Indian facility located at  Oragadam near Chennai. Nissan has already stated that India is an important market for the company and they are looking at delivering products across categories. The Nissan Micra is doing well and has been well accepted in the most cutthroat segment and now with the sedan, Nissan is bullish about capturing a fair marketshare in the entry level family sedan category as well.

Speaking about the new car, Mr. Kiminobu Tokuyama, Managing Director & CEO, Nissan Motor India Pvt. Ltd. (NMIPL) adds, "Following the success of our first locally made car –the Nissan Micra, we are happy to reveal the first visuals of the second car to be produced in India. We are confident that the "New Global Sedan", which is also based on the versatile 'V' platform, will delight the discerning Indian customers. The model will be launched in India in the second half of 2011."

Though the company has been tightlipped about the Indian version of the sedan, we don't expect it to be too different from the Chinese version.  The Sunny is a versatile family sedan that offers space, dynamic styling and class leading fuel efficiency.  A strong focus has been given to occupant comfort and it is said that this is the car of choice for many young families. Engine specifications are expected to be different and India might even get a diesel offering, but for confirmation of those details, it is going to be a wait and watch game.

HONDA CB TWISTER 110

Premium 100cc Motorcycle of the Year - Honda CB Twister 110

The Honda CB Twister 110 took the top honours in the battle for 2010 ET ZigWheels Premium 100cc Motorcycle of the Year.

ET ZigWheels Best Premium 100cc Motorcycle - Honda CB Twister 110

Never before has the Indian commuter seen something so fashionable and funky as the Honda CB Twister in this class. An opportunity rightly spotted and superbly capitalised by Honda, it brought the upmarket feel of a high-end motorcycle within the bounds of consumers looking for a stylish product in the 100-110cc category of motorcycles. Usually known for charging a premium on its motorcycles, this time though Honda priced the CB Twister 110 extremely competitively at just Rs. 42,000 (ex-showroom, Delhi).

The CB Twister’s youthful charm coupled with its sporty demeanor added that much-needed spunk in this class bringing to the fore the fact that masses are now welcoming sporty products with aggressive styling even in the 100-110cc class of motorcycles. The trends are changing and the CB Twister does a fantastic job at mixing work and pleasure without having to empty one’s wallet. The fit-and-finish as well as the overall built quality on the Twister is truly world class level and one can clearly see that Honda has cut no corners here even though the pricing is kept competitive. Out of the three launches in the 100cc class this year – the Honda CB Twister, the Yamaha YBR110 and the latest entrant, Mahindra Stallio, the Honda trumped its two rivals on the basis of price-point, aesthetics, comfort, refinement and its lively handling.

The Yamaha YBR 110 came close to the Honda CB Twister on a few accounts like comfort, mileage and refinement, but lost out in the pricing as well as the looks department. The Stallio appealed as a good first effort from Mahindra but running parallelly along side the Twister and the YBR, it certainly lacked the upmarket appeal or the energetic and liveliness of the other two and not to forget, it is also was the most expensive of the three.

APPLE IPAD

APPLE IPAD NEW

Tablet computers have been around for quite a while. They are a very specific niche market. The Apple iPad did not exactly break ground with the concept. However, they did break ground by having a massive array of applications readymade to utilize a tablet computer. As well as this, it was also able to handle 3G connections for roaming Internet virtually anywhere you can get a 3G signal (in later models). While it may be cheaper for someone to just buy a notebook – and give you some greater functionality – it may not be as user friendly or accessible for some people.

The Apple iPad has a very specific niche market. You are not required to be technologically savvy in order to use it. In fact, if you have an Apple iPhone or use a similar touch screen enabled phone then the learning curve in learning to use the Apple iPhone will be non-existent. The Apple iPad is a device that is better suited to people who need or want to use mobile computing as well as have the opportunity to use the Internet anywhere without hassle. A good example of how the Apple iPad can be a great mobile computing device is for people who have limited space to carry a notebook while traveling and still want to be connected to their email, various entertainment options and a machine in which they can use to work.
I am in the habit of using having a notebook sitting on my coffee table as I am watching television. If I ever want more information (or want to keep an eye on my email, shares or just fill the advertisement breaks with something fun or interesting) on something I can see, I have an Internet connection right in front of me to do so. This can also be considered a niche that the Apple iPad fulfils.
